Free ECS Winter/Spring Tutoring: Registration Opens Today

Dear ECS families,

The ECS Tutoring Corps is excited to provide free, 1:1 tutoring to 90 ECS students in grades 1–11 for the third year in a row.

Registration for the winter/spring tutoring cycle will open at 5 p.m. TODAY, Thursday, Dec. 15, and spots are expected to fill quickly. Tutoring sessions occur virtually for 60 minutes twice a week and will run from Jan. 9 to June 2, 2023. Please note that tutoring spots are first come, first served, and when registration is full, any additional registrants will be added to our waitlist. We typically see movement in our waitlist as enrolled tutoring students' needs change.

How Tutoring Works

  • Students, and their families, commit to attending virtual tutoring twice per week for 60 minutes unless their schedule can only accommodate once per week. We will review once-per-week tutoring on a case-by-case basis.

  • Tutoring takes place after school, remotely, via a digital platform (Zoom or LessonSpace). There is no in-person tutoring at this time.

  • Tutors are high-performing college students from around the United States.

  • Poor attendance will result in the student's removal from the tutoring program to allow an open spot for other interested students.

  • There is no tutoring during Spring Break.

  • If you have a tutoring session scheduled when ECS is closed for a day off, you can decide to have the tutoring session as planned, cancel the session, or reschedule for another day if the tutor’s schedule permits. Our goal is to establish a consistent schedule each week in order to maximize the impact of tutoring.

  • If you are in need of a device, please select that option on the registration form. ECS will provide a laptop for students enrolled in tutoring.

Frequently Ask Questions

  • Can my student sign up for two tutoring spots? Students can only be assigned one tutoring spot. We cannot assign a student one tutoring spot for math and one tutoring spot for reading.

  • Can my student sign up for both math and reading tutoring? Students can receive tutoring in both math and ELA; if you request this, the time is typically split between math and ELA. You must commit to twice per week to receive tutoring in math and ELA.

  • Do we have to do tutoring twice per week? We understand some families cannot commit to tutoring twice per week and do accommodate some students for once-per-week tutoring. However, we see the maximum growth in students who are able to commit to tutoring twice per week.

  • Do you focus on the ECS curriculum? We align with the ECS curriculum as much as possible; sometimes it is necessary for students to backfill content knowledge so that they can comfortably do the grade-level content.

  • Can we cancel a tutoring session? If you need to cancel a scheduled session, you must notify us more than 4 hours in advance of the scheduled session. Otherwise, the tutor gets paid for the session and it cannot be rescheduled. If you late cancel more than 3 times (e.g., you do not cancel more than 4 hours in advance), your ECS student will be eligible to be discontinued from tutoring. Note: If you are allotted a once-per-week spot, you can only miss 2x throughout the winter/spring term.

  • Can we cancel if my student does not have any homework that week? This is not a homework-help program; while tutors do support students in completing their homework, we also expect students to attend tutoring if they don’t have homework. This is a great time to build on key foundational skills.
