Dear ECS Stakeholders,

I’d be remiss not to mention that while ECS will provide monthly updates, the construction process is often slow with sometimes little to report. Similar to last month’s update, ECS is still in the bidding phase to find the construction company that will build the actual building. The bidding phase is slated for completion in early 2023, and I look forward to providing you with additional information once that phase is finalized.

Nonetheless, I’m excited to announce that ECS will host the ECHS Construction Staff and Family Reception on Thursday, Jan. 26 in the Middle School Cafe starting at 6:30 p.m. This event will provide our ECS community the opportunity to hear from a member of AUROS Group, the building’s project manager.

In the past, ECS worked with AUROS Group on its renovation of the Middle School, and I am pleased to work with them again as we build a one-of-a-kind high school. AUROS Group advocates for zero energy, zero carbon, and healthy indoor air quality in its buildings and will share what makes the ECHS space unique in comparison to other green schools. Save the date for this event, and be on the lookout for the registration information in my January 8th District Newsletter.

Before I wrap up this month’s communication, I want to inform you of the building’s connection to UN Sustainable Development Goal 2, Zero Hunger. While ECS partners with Community Kitchen Pittsburgh to provide fresh meals to our students daily, the new high school building will have built-in from-scratch kitchen space. This distinctive addition will allow an official school chef to cook meals on-site for our students as well as eliminate the need for food deliveries which is an important piece to lowering the use of fuel to transport items to the building.

Behind the Cafe space will reside a learning kitchen that will reminisce on students’ edible schoolyard days, but with a twist. The learning kitchen will host a variety of built-in tools such as ovens and stove tops that will help students develop their culinary skills while educating them about food’s role in different cultures, responsible practices, and sustainable procedures revolving around hunger in our community and world.

I am thrilled that the high school will have not one, but two kitchens that will support ECS’s mission and commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This building is filled with extraordinary and impressive elements, but for now, I hope to see you at the Jan. 26 event.

Be Well,

Jon McCann
