Over the summer, members of the ECS staff were trained in the Ukeru Program which is a trauma-informed de-escalation program, and we are excited to announce the integration of this program at ECS. This innovative training is currently circulating through K-12 schools in the state of Pennsylvania and across the country and is a new way to keep staff and students safe.

We believe that all interventions — educational and behavioral — should be built on an approach of comfort versus control. To help students recognize, understand, and be comfortable with the Ukeru Program, tools similar to those pictured will appear throughout the buildings in easy-to-access locations. Students can use these materials for a variety of activities outside of the program including indoor play, flexible and soft seating, and more! Homebase lessons regarding the Ukeru Program, its application, and accompanying supplies will take place beginning in September.

Currently, building principals and members of the student services team are trained in the Ukeru program. Training for additional staff members will occur later in the school year. ECS is pleased to offer the additional support of Ukeru district-wide, and we look forward to broadening the program to more staff members so they may also utilize this new training on the conceptual ideas — such as trauma-informed care and conflict resolution.
