“ECS offers a program that develops students into critical thinkers, thoughtful innovators, and well- rounded scholars. We provide students the tools and educational foundation to become tomorrow’s global citizen, and we strive to teach students how their choices impact the world around them.”
The Environmental Charter School (ECS) is a Pittsburgh Public School (PPS) serving students in grades K-8. As a PPS chartered school, ECS is known for innovative practices, a progressive education model, and a place-based approach to learning. More importantly, we are a learning laboratory to do school differently.
At ECS, we create opportunities to thrive. We have the opportunity to reinvent culture by providing educational experiences that allow children to interact thoughtfully with their world. ECS focuses on well-being, relationships, perseverance, and integrity. We encourage curiosity and creativity while constantly working to ensure our actions support the culture we want to see and feel.
In November of 2007, a small group of inspired parents and community leaders planted the seeds of our school in the form of a charter application. The charter application was approved in late spring 2008, and in fall 2008 we opened our doors to our first cohort of students in grades K-3. Since then we have grown a grade each year and have learned a tremendous amount about what it takes to design a school that is committed to a “whatever-it-takes” approach to achieve success for all students.
